It is time to pause and review our knowledge of this system. The
first view reveals a moon and earth endowed with a force of inertia
going on in space in straight lines; but an invisible elastic cord of
attraction holds them together, just counterbalancing this tendency
to fly apart, and hence they circle round their centre of gravity.
The revolving earth turns every part of its surface to the moon in
each twenty-four hours. By an axial revolution in the same time
that the moon goes round the earth, the moon holds the same point
of its surface constantly toward the earth. If we were to add one,
two, four, eight moons at appropriate distances, the result would
be the same. There is, however, another attractive influence–that
of the sun. The sun attracts both earth and moon, but their nearer
affection for each other keeps them from going apart. They both,
revolving on their axes and around their centre of gravity, sweep
in a vastly wider curve around the sun. Add as many moons as has
Jupiter or Saturn, the result is the same–an orderly carrying
of worlds through space.
Infinity itself is old, and the idea that infinity exists–a kind of
huge, empty rim around human life–is not a new idea to us, but the
idea that this same infinity has or can have anything to do with us or
with our arts, or our theories of art, or that we have anything to do
with IT, is an essentially modern discovery. The actual experience of
infinity–that is, the experience of being infinite (comparatively
speaking)–as in the use of machinery, is a still more modern
discovery. There is no better way perhaps, of saying what modern
machinery really is, than to say that it is a recent invention for
being infinite.

sight than it proves to be after more exhaustive study
Like some other problems in telephony, this one seems simpler at first
sight than it proves to be after more exhaustive study. It is possible
for any amateur to produce at once a repeating device which will relay
telephone circuits in one direction. It is required, however, that in
practice the voice currents be relayed in both directions, and
further, that the relay actually augment the energy which passes
through it; that is, that it will send on a more powerful current than
it receives. Most of the devices so far invented fail in one or the
other of these particulars. Several ways have been shown of assembling
repeating devices which will talk both ways, but not many assembling
repeating devices have been shown that will talk both ways and augment
in both directions.
apprehended by a reference to fig. 36, which is a McNaught”s indicator.
Upon a movable barrel A, a piece of paper is wound, the ends of which are
secured by the slight brass clamps shown in the drawing. The barrel is
supported by the bracket _b_, proceeding from the body of the indicator,
and at the bottom of the barrel a watch spring is coiled with one end
attached to the barrel and the other end to the bracket, so that when the
barrel is drawn round by a string wound upon its lower end like a roller
blind, the spring returns the barrel to its original position, when the
string is relaxed. The string is attached to some suitable part of the
engine, and at every stroke the string is drawn out, turning round the
barrel, and the barrel is returned again by the spring on the return
stroke.
